New Delhi | May 1, 2026
Field operations for Phase I (Houselisting and Housing Census) of Census 2027, India’s first fully digital Census, have commenced today in Central District, Delhi under the leadership of the District Magistrate.
This phase marks the beginning of a comprehensive exercise to identify and list all buildings and households, along with collecting key information on housing conditions, amenities, and assets. The data collected will serve as a critical foundation for the subsequent Population Enumeration phase.
A digital Self-Enumeration facility was made available to residents, enabling citizens to submit their details online in advance. This initiative aimed to enhance citizen participation, improve convenience, and ensure wider coverage by encouraging early and voluntary data submission.
To strengthen public awareness and community participation, outreach activities such as Nukkad Natak (street plays) and other Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) initiatives have been conducted across the district. These efforts saw active participation from organizations including IACT Education Pvt. Ltd. and Trinity Foundation, who supported in mobilizing communities and spreading awareness about the Census.
Trained Enumerators will undertake door-to-door visits across the district to collect information from households and validate data submitted through self-enumeration. All Enumerators will carry valid identity cards and follow prescribed procedures to ensure transparency and authenticity.
Census 2027 represents a significant technological advancement, incorporating mobile-based data collection, a secure web platform, and real-time monitoring systems. These innovations are expected to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the Census process.
The Government reiterates that all information collected during the Census is strictly confidential and is protected under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. The data will be used solely for statistical purposes.
Under Sections 8 and 9 of the Census Act, 1948, all residents are legally required to provide accurate information and extend full cooperation to Census officials during their visits.
Residents of Central District are urged to actively participate and support this important national exercise.
